Cure Hydrocephalus
Research at $535/day
Problem
Hydrocephalus occurs in approximately 1 in 500 births. There is no known cure for Hydrocephalus. The standard treatment, a surgical placement of a shunt, was developed in 1954. For unknown reasons, the shunt often malfunctions and has to be replaced many times. The shunt has allowed many children and adults to survive, and even thrive, but it is not the perfect answer to this life-long condition. The complications of shunting remain an important problem in the treatment of hydrocephalus.
The Gift
Your donation will help put us one step closer to finding a cure for hydrocephalus. Since the government gives almost no funding toward meaningful Hydrocephalus research, hope for a cure has been hard to come by. Most research being done is focused on creating a new type of shunt; since treating a condition is much more profitable than curing one. In the entire United States, there are only a handful of research centers dedicated to true Hydrocephalus research. The HNI uses 100% of donated dollars to finance the research effort.
