Problem
In order to understand and solve global warming, society needs world-class scientific research. Too often, though, the science is presented in a technical way that is lost on the decision-makers and the public, who need the information to act wisely. Science teachers and interpreters can serve as crucial bridges between the experts and the public – but to do so they need access to the latest and best climate science and scientists.
The Gift
Your gift will sponsor four educators’ attendance at one of CA-CP’s “Meet the Scientists" events, organized through the Northeast Science Center Collaborative. You can help bring world-class climate scientists and expert science educators together at one of these day-long professional development forums - which include interactive lectures on specific climate change topics, opportunities to visit lab or field sites, time to ask questions and opportunities to network with peers. Educators benefit by gaining a better understanding of how climate changes as a result of natural processes and human activity, how the rate of change affects organisms living in specific habitats, what society can do to mitigate its impacts, and what scientists’ research methodologies and analytic techniques are - which can then be passed on to diverse audiences. Scientists in turn gain a better understanding of how informal educators present complicated subject matter to the public in “digestible bits."
