Overview

OASIS offers programs through educational centers in 26 cities. Partnerships with department stores, health care providers, community organizations, libraries, colleges and universities allow OASIS to reach a broad and diverse audience. The OASIS Institute in St. Louis serves as the national headquarters. The Institute develops partnerships and provides staff training, programs, quality standards, technology, financial and fundraising support.

Mission

OASIS is a national, non-profit education organization designed to enhance the quality of life for mature adults. Offering challenging programs in the arts, humanities, health, technology and civic engagement, OASIS strengthens communities by providing lifelong learning and service opportunities that inspire mature adults to pursue vibrant, healthy, and productive lives.

Program

Each OASIS center publishes a catalog of courses three times a year with locally and nationally developed programs. The Institute develops national program models, for example:

Lewis & Clark: Journey to Another America, a six week scholar-led discussion series developed with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

HealthStages, a proactive behavior-change program to reduce health risks for mature adults by helping them understand and address their changing health needs.

Active Living Every Day, a 20-week course to promote daily physical activity, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

OASIS Connections, a program to help people develop technology skills to connect with friends, family and information and function effectively in today’s workplace.

OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring, a program to help children in the primary grades learn to read and build confidence and success in school.

Impact

OASIS serves more than 367,000 members age 50 and older. In 2005 10,900 OASIS volunteers contributed 535,000 hours of service valued at $10 million. Of these volunteers, 5,530 serve as tutors to more than 19,000 children in grades k-4 who are reading and writing below grade level. A recent study by Maryville University indicated that OASIS tutors are providing valuable support for struggling students. Test scores demonstrate that 95 percent of students who worked with an OASIS tutor improved their reading skill. Almost two-thirds of the students progressed at a rate that is considered accelerated beyond the normal classroom experience.

Promote Literacy

Generational tutoring

The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program promotes literacy by tapping a rich resource, older adults, to tutor children who are at risk in k-4 grades. This program utilizes an innovative approach designed to build children’s self-esteem and positive attitude toward learning while strengthening reading skills. Working with elementary schools, OASIS pairs older adults with young children with underdeveloped reading and language skills. The adults work one-on-one...
