We are the only non profit agency in America providing a single point of entry to community-based crisis services through innovative telephony and internet based technologies; that also brings national attention and access to services for post partum depression and other women’s mood disorders; through education and advocacy; through formal research and evaluation of crisis line services; and, by championing the need for national funding for community-based suicide prevention crisis services.
Mission
Depression is treatable and suicide is the most preventable form of death in the United States today.
The Kristin Brooks Hope Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to suicide prevention, intervention and healing: by providing a single point of entry to community-based crisis services through innovative telephony and internet based technologies; by bringing national attention and access to services for post partum depression and other women’s mood disorders; through education and advocacy; through formal research and evaluation of crisis line services; and, by championing the need for national funding for community-based suicide prevention crisis services.
History
The Hopeline Network 1-800-SUICIDE (784-2433) is not a "new" hotline. It simply brings the tremendous knowledge, skill and resources of existing crisis centers under the safety net of a single, easy-to-remember, toll-free telephone number. People in crisis generally don't have the energy or ability to take on a long search for help. The Hopeline Network makes appropriate, critical services available to all.
The National Hopeline Network was activated in Sept. of 1998 to connect callers - people who are depressed or suicidal, or those who are concerned about someone they love - automatically to a certified crisis center. Using the ANI (Automatic Number Identification) system, telephone calls are routed to the Hopeline Network affiliated crisis center nearest to where the person is when the call is placed.
Crisis center calls are answered by trained crisis line workers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In the event that the nearest crisis center is at maximum volume, the call is seamlessly rerouted to the next center.

Impact
The NHN is the first suicide hotline network in the world. Prior to 1998 there was no national toll free hotline that connected to crisis centers that were certified. In a short nine years the NHN has grown from 10 calls a day to over 1,000 calls a day. 1-800-SUICIDE has been featured on MTV, MTV2, VH1, Fox Family Channel, HBO, Lifetime TV, BET, Oprah, Americas Most Wanted, OC, Boston Public and Nickelodeon. KBHC accomplished the following:
• Transition from almost 100% federal funding to 100% private donations and grants from the NGO sector
• Completion of a three year successful positive evaluation of the NHN
• Completed the 6th Annual Take Action Tour raising over $150,000 (largest of the 4 efforts) and our 4th year outreach on the Warped Tour reaching over a million youth with a message of help and hope
• Produced the Enhanced Content containing suicide prevention training and awareness for the 6th annual Take Action CD compilation to help at risk youth who buy the CD’s
• 3rd Annual Press Conference on Capitol Hill calling for the full funding of the Garret Lee Smith Memorial Act resulting in the largest funding appropriations for suicide prevention in history $16 million (Speakers inc. Reps. Patrick Kennedy D-RI and Howard Berman D-CA)
• Garnered over 100,000 signatures to support the GLSMA and Mental Health Parity
• Garnered over 1 Billion media hits
• Launched Preventing Suicide the National Journal as a web periodical www.preventsuicide.net
Goals
Launch the Hope In Action Tour to bring the message of hope to colleges across the US. To teach gatekeeper training to the same school administrators, students and professors.
To add 100 crisis centers to the network. To train 500 peer to peer online counselors for our various programs.
To develop and launch online training for our online counselors.
CEO
H. Reese Butler II has more than 20 years experience both starting successful businesses, including two national newspapers, and with companies that utilize telecommunications and web-based data collection systems. After losing his wife, Kristin Brooks Rossell, to suicide on April 7th 1998, Reese founded the Kristin Brooks Hope Center and the National Hopeline Network 1.800.SUICIDE. He created 13 active separate programs within the KBHC from publishing the National Journal Preventing Suicide to the 1-800-PPD MOMS (post partum depression peer support network). For 6 years in a row has reached millions of at risk youth through the Take Action Tour which combines a live music tour with a CD which contains music and suicide prevention resources and training materials.
Since 1998 when Reese turned his focus to the prevention of suicide, he has helped launch several other organizations: the National Council For Suicide Prevention, the California Suicide Prevention Advocacy Network (SPAN-CA), and the Virginia Suicide Prevention Council.
Due to Reese’s vision and the National Hopeline Network’s use of cutting edge telephony technology, the Kristin Brooks Hope Center became a recipient of the prestigious 2002 A Search for New Heroes Award, the Computerworld Honors Program’s Online Archive of information technology innovation. In 2005 he was recognized by the National Mental Health Association with a special award for his contributions to the prevention of suicide.
