Overview

ILSR was founded in 1974 and provides technical and research support to organizations and communities around on a wide range of issues including, decentralized energy, waste reduction, building deconstruction,publicly-owned information networks and developing locally owned business networks.

Mission

To provide the conceptual framework, strategies and information to aid the creation of ecologically sound and economically equitable communities. ILSR works with citizens, activists, policymakers and entrepreneurs to design systems, policies and enterprises that meet local or regional needs; to maximize the efficient use of local resources.

Program

New Rules Project - designing rules as if communities matter. Working on promoting city-owned information networks, flex-fuel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle future, carbon neutral development, helping communities fight big box retail developments and supporting locally owned business development.

Carbohydrate Economy - replacing petrochemical derived materials with plant matter derived materials and chemicals with a focus on farmer-owned manufacturing.

Waste to Wealth - helping communities get to zero waste, establishing building deconstruction policy and business development, encouraging a switch to bio-plastics.

Healthy Building Network - working with industry and communities to ensure that building materials limit their impact on the environment and people.

Impact

Each year ILSR, helps dozens of communities take more control over their local, ecologically responsible economic development.
