Problem
The U.S. African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) forms the basis of US-African trade policy and symbolizes the commitment of the US to expand trade with Africa. However, AGOA has had little impact on poverty or hunger. Oil and gas account for 90% of imports under AGOA while agricultural imports account for less then 1%. There is significant potential to expand agricultural exports but it is very difficult for countries to meet the export guidelines.
The Gift
Your gift of $2000 will sponsor a Capitol Hill breakfast for Congressmen, staff and U.S. Executive Agency personnel to hear directly from African farmers and agribusinesses about their experiences with AGOA and their priorities for assistance that will help them export more agricultural products. Increased exports will create more jobs in the African countryside and have a real impact on African poverty and hunger.
