Increase Efficiency
One energy audit
Problem
SAHF members own roughly one percent of publicly assisted, affordable rental housing in America. In 2005, SAHF members spent $65 million on energy. Tenants’ contributions to energy bills added several million more. These costs place stress on owners, tenants, and government agencies that make housing affordable to low-income seniors and workers. Energy bills threaten affordability for all, and inefficient buildings contribute to global warming. SAHF is leading the way in addressing this problem.
The Gift
Your gift will enable a SAHF member to assess the energy efficiency of an affordable apartment building as part of a SAHF pilot project. Without a professional assessment, a nonprofit owner cannot raise the funds for energy and cost savings measures. SAHF's pilot projects will set patterns for affordable housing, identify the regulatory barriers to energy-efficiency investments, and provide the basis for SAHF's policy recommendations to government officials and utilities.
