Promote Learning
Afternoon of tutoring
Problem
More than 14 million school age children are on their own after the school day ends. These children and teenagers need access to constructive after school activities in order to stay out of trouble. Teens who are unsupervised after the school day ends are nearly three times more likely to skip classes than teens who do participate and are more likely to use marijuana or other drugs, drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.
The Gift
One way to keep kids out of trouble is to encourage learning all day long. With this aim, the National Housing Trust strives to provide quality after school tutoring services at many of its properties. A donation of $40 will help us provide one afternoon of quality after school tutoring for 2-3 disadvantaged young students. The families who live at our properties often cannot afford to enroll their children in after school programs. By providing after school tutoring, we ensure these children have access to a safe, supervised environment where they can continue learning long after the school bell rings.
