In Africa, 80% of the poor are small scale farmers. They depend on unreliable rains, and they grow, at most, two cycles of crops per year. Their most valuable assets are their small plots of land and their basic farming skills. The best way for them to make money is to move from rain-fed subsistence farming, to irrigated agriculture. With irrigation they can grow high value crops all year-round. They get higher yields, and most importantly, can produce crops during the dry season.
