Organize Water Users
One month of support
Problem
The challenges faced by the water sector in addressing the growing number of developing country populations living in areas of water scarcity are exacerbated by an unequal balance in how water is allocated to people. The people who are directly affected usually have little or no involvement or voice in decision-making processes surrounding water allocation. Current institutions serving this purpose are often fragmented, top-down and ineffective in achieving equitable and appropriate water management and allocation.
The Gift
With the growing recognition of the importance in local level participation in decision-making processes surrounding water, IWMI has been working in a number of regions around the world to support the formation and running of local level water institutions such as Water User Associations. The Water user associations are a vital approach to ensuring participation by farmers in water management and allocation decision-making. Support to the running of these community-based institutions is required to ensure sustainability in involving farmers in water allocation decisions, providing them with a structure for devising mechanisms for water delivery amongst all farmers in the community and providing them with a platform for conflict resolution. Your gift will provide necessary resources to make this vital participation work, to support the necessary human and financial needs for an institution, and to ensure sustainability of activities.
