Physician diplomacy
Problem
When adversaries stop talking to each other, suspicion and hostility fuel the conditions that can lead to arms buildups, military threats, and war. When the parties to a conflict possess nuclear weapons or feel compelled to acquire them, the failure to find diplomatic solutions could have unimaginable consequences.
The Gift
Your gift will help IPPNW do what it has done best for almost 30 years—bring physicians from adversarial countries together with each other and with nuclear decision makers to confront the nuclear threat rather than each other. Today, IPPNW’s approach to physician diplomacy and dialogue is building bridges between doctors and medical students in India and Pakistan, and has helped physicians in the US and Iran reach out to each other across a deepening political divide. Where few others have succeeded, IPPNW physicians from Sweden and Germany have sent delegations to hospitals in Pyongyang and have welcomed North Korean doctors to their countries, helping to foster two-way communications with the world’s most isolated nuclear-armed state.
