Book for print disabled
Problem
Less than 5% of all print publications are available to people with learning and print disabilities that prevent them from reading traditional printed material. The only way these individuals can read most publications is to acquire audio texts or to manually scan publications and convert the text into digitized speech or Braille – an expensive and time consuming process. This presents a significant barrier to reading and access to information for people with print disabilities.
The Gift
Your gift will make a new popular literature book available to thousands of people who would otherwise be without access. Your book will be added to Bookshare.org, an online digital library of over 29,000 books and newspapers for the print disabled. Thousands of Bookshare.org members will be able to download your book to read it as Braille, in large print or as synthesized speech. Bookshare.org dramatically increases access to books for the community of visually impaired and otherwise print disabled individuals. This online community enables book scans to be shared, eliminating significant duplication of effort. Bookshare.org takes advantage of a special exemption in the U.S. copyright law that permits the reproduction of publications into specialized formats for the disabled.
