Furnish A Room
Buy A Roman Blind
Problem
This project is to furnish 68 dorm rooms in a newly built men's residence hall in Johannesburg, South Africa with beds, desks and chests of drawers so these rooms can be made useful, comfortable and then occupied. Each room will house three students, almost all of these bright students who are sincerely focused on their education- come from impoverished families and a large number grew up in rural villages and squatter camps and going away to college is a huge sacrifice for their families.
The Gift
By furnishing the rooms, these students who are the first generation in their families to be getting a college education will benefit from a home while pursuing their education. Not just one group of 195 students but 195 students every year for years to come. This project is relatively easy to facilitate but its impact will be enormous. Hopefully, many generations of previously disadvantaged students from South Africa and across the continent will also begin to pursue an advanced degree and become entrepreneurs and community leaders. In this way, the economic impact will be leveraged on a grand scale.
