Shelter A Victim
One month of housing
Problem
Torture is endemic in Asia. Police officers and soldiers routinely abuse people in their custody, often causing serious injuries or death. Victims and their families who complain risk harassment and revenge attacks. They need a safe place to stay, and sometimes must relocate permanently. In Sri Lanka, the government does nothing to support torture victims. Instead, local groups work together to offer them safety and shelter. With protection, victims can begin fighting back against abuse.
The Gift
Your gift will help cover the basic costs of housing a torture victim in Sri Lanka for one month. The recipient of your gift may be a young boy or his mother: someone forced from home by events beyond their control, someone now depending on the goodwill of others to get life back on track. And with a place to stay and people to help, this person can act to stop others from suffering the same abuse that he or she experienced. In this way, your gift to one will be a gift to many others too.
