Overview

Founded by singer/songwriter Paul Simon and pediatrician/child advocate Irwin Redlener, M.D., in 1987, CHF launched the New York Children’s Health Project with one “big blue van,” a state-of-the-art mobile medical unit that brings medical care directly to children with the least access and offers a medical home to families, ensuring that they have accessible, comprehensive, and culturally competent primary care. CHF replicated this model, creating the National Network of 21 pediatric programs throughout the US.

Mission

The Children’s Health Fund (CHF) is committed to providing health care to the nation’s most medically underserved children and their families through the development and support of innovative primary care medical programs, response to public health crises, and the promotion of guaranteed access to appropriate health care for all children.

Program

CHF responds to the needs of medically underserved children and families across the country as follows: New York City Programs provide top-quality health care to New York City’s neediest families, including mental health services, health education, and nutrition counseling. The NYCHP brings medical teams to 13 homeless and domestic violence shelters. The South Bronx Health Center for Children and Families offers an array of services, including prenatal care, HIV services, and dental care. The new Harlem Children’s Health Project is a school-based health care and resource center. The Children’s Health Fund National Network is comprised of 21 Children’s Health Projects that provide medical care to disadvantaged children via fixed-site clinics and mobile medical units at schools and other community agencies. Public Policy - CHF is a respected presence in D.C. and across the U.S., promoting policies that address health care barriers seen in the field every day. CHF advocates on issues from transportation roadblocks to insurance gaps that prevent children from getting care. The Children’s Health Fund develops innovative programs that meet the challenging and diverse needs of America’s medically underserved children such as: Childhood Asthma Initiative; Starting Right, obesity prevention and management; and Electronic Health Records System.

Impact

CHF Projects have provided care to over 350,000 children in more than 1.2 million patient visits. CHF has improved the health literacy of thousands of children and parents by developing low-literacy bilingual health education materials on important topics like asthma and nutrition. CHF continues to promote access to health care for all American children and has played an active role in the passage of the State Children's Health Insurance Program, which provides health insurance to low-income children not eligible for Medicaid.
