About Us
See Our GiftsOverview
Books are crucial to the political, spiritual and educational development of all people. Education is a powerful tool that greatly reduces the chances of inmates returning to the prison system after their release. Prison educational programs have been drastically cut and most prisoners cannot afford to buy their own books. Most prisons do not allow family and friends to send books into prisons. That's where we step in to help!
Mission
Prison Book Program provides prisoners with free reading materials. With prisoners isolated in facilities that have chronically insufficient educational opportunities, we provide these materials to improve their lives and the communities they return to when released and to reduce the likelihood of their return to the prison system.
Program
The primary work of the Prison Book Program is sending books to prisoners. Prisoners simply have to send us a letter and we will send them books. We work to fill requests promptly, but we sometimes receive such a large quantity of requests that orders can be delayed up to 3 or 4 months.
Prison Book Program can rarely match requests for specific titles so it is best that people request a subject rather than specific books. Our selection is limited to what has been donated but we try to make a wide variety of books available, and we will do our best to find something that fits the interests of the prisoner.
Impact
In 2007, we were able to send books to over 8000 prisoners across the US. That's more than 16,000 books. Anectdotal evidence tells us that these books will be read by up to 25 people before they reach the end of their useful life.
