Overview

Founded in 1937, Plan's one of the largest child-centered community development organizations in the world. We work in 63 countries on projects and initiatives that bring hope and help to the world’s poorest children. We are proudly private, non-profit and respectful of local religions and cultures. Plan USA is proud to have met the standards of the Better Business Bureaus’ Wise Giving Alliance.

Mission

We strive to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of life of deprived children in developing countries through a process that unites people across cultures and adds meaning and value to their lives by enabling children, families and communities to meet their basic needs, fostering relationships, and promoting children’s rights.

History

Plan was founded in 1937 by British journalist John Langdon-Davies and refugee worker Eric Muggeridge. Originally named 'Foster Parents Plan for Children in Spain', the aim was to provide food, accommodation and education to children whose lives had been disrupted by the Spanish Civil War.

During WWII, we expanded to work with displaced children throughout war-torn Europe.

In the 1950s, we gradually began working with deprived children throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Our organization was renamed Plan International to reflect our aim of bringing lasting improvement to the lives of children in need wherever they live, whatever their circumstances.

Today, Plan works in 49 developing countries and is one of the world's largest development organizations. Child sponsorship is the foundation of our organization.

Program

Plan is a child-centered organization. We are dedicated to working at the grassroots level with the active participation of children, their families and their communities to devise, implement and evaluate development projects that provide long lasting improvements.

Our programs focus on five interrelated areas:

Growing Up Healthy - Ensuring children have the means and the knowledge to grow up healthy is a core part of our program. We fight for their protection and their healthy development.

Learning - We want all children, adolescents and adults to acquire basic learning and life skills so as to contribute to the future of their communities.

Habitat - For children to reach their full potential they need to live in safe and healthy homes and neighborhoods—"habitats." We work with communities to focus and act on children’s habitat needs.

Livelihood - We address the root cause of poverty with award-winning strategies that help parents—especially mothers—with poverty-busting credit and small business development programs.

Building Relationships - Increasing understanding and unity among people of different cultures and countries is a goal that we take very seriously.
