Overview

North Carolina Stage Company is Asheville's professional theatre company. We combine exemplary acting and aesthetic vision to fulfill the theatrical task of telling the story. NC Stage renews our belief in the power of human connection, artistic ingenuity, and collective experience.

Mission

The mission of North Carolina Stage Company is to enrich the cultural life of Western North Carolina by providing a year-round professional theatre season with a focus on classical plays and developing future theatergoers through arts education programs.

History

North Carolina Stage Company began as a seed planted in New York City between a working professional actor and a director from the National Shakespeare Company. Charlie and Angie Flynn-McIver returned home to North Carolina and began this professional theatre company in the fall of 2001, starting first with NCSC's education programming and then producing NCSC's first Mainstage production in March of 2002. NCSC has grown considerably since then, with a production either in rehearsal or performance 49 out of 52 weeks this season.

Program

NC Stage employs actors, directors, designers, and playwrights who make their living in the field of theatre. NC Stage also provides opportunities for local theatre professionals to work in their chosen field. NC Stage will produce a wide variety of plays while focusing on classics, especially Shakespeare. Through STAGES, a comprehensive program that teaches the play form and performance skills and culminates in the students' experiencing a live NC Stage production, the company helps to develop a new generation of theatregoers. By working in the schools to bring live theatre to young audiences, keeping ticket prices low, sponsoring a "Pay-What-You-Can" night, and actively targeting underserved populations, NC Stage will expand the traditional audience base to include people in every walk of Asheville life.
