Overview

Founded in 1983 by veterinarian Elliot Katz, In Defense of Animals' staff have worked tirelessly to protect the rights, welfare and habitats of animals through undercover investigations, rescue operations, grassroots activism, media campaigns, boycotts, lawsuits and legislation. Sanctuary and veterinary care are provided through our field offices in Portland, OR; our sanctuary for abused animals in rural Mississippi; our chimpanzee forest sanctuary in Cameroon, Africa; and our veterinary hospital in Mumbai, India.

Mission

To represent the interests of animals; to end individual, governmental, and corporate exploitation and abuse of animals by elevating their status beyond that of mere commodities, property and things; and to protect, defend and advocate for the rights, welfare and habitats of animals.

Program

To care for the injured and abused, and to prevent animal cruelty wherever it might exist, IDA staff conduct programs in the United States and around the world. IDA-Africa fights the chimpanzee bush meat trade while running a chimpanzee forest sanctuary in Cameroon, Africa. Project Hope, our sanctuary for abused animals in Grenada, Mississippi, has given sanctuary and saved the lives of thousands of abused and abandoned animals. IDA-India, through its veterinary hospital and spay/neuter clinic, cares for the street dogs and donkeys of Mumbai, India. IDA campaigns include exposing and ending the cruelties of the vivisection, factory farming, foie gras, and fur industries; the Korean dog and cat meat trade; the exploitation and suffering of animals in rodeos, zoos and circuses; and the killing of homeless animals in our nation’s shelters. Our Guardian campaign promotes respect and responsible care of animal companions by promoting the use of the term “animal guardian" instead of the term “animal owner." IDA’s Undercover TV airs on over 80 community access channels across the nation, exposing viewers to the terrible realities of the factory farming, fur, circus, and vivisection industries. Visit www.idausa.org to learn more about IDA’s far reaching campaigns and programs.

Impact

Our accomplishments include: canceling the slaughter of thousands of seals off the coast of South Africa; creating a chimpanzee sanctuary in Cameroon, Africa and a sanctuary in Mississippi that has saved the lives of thousands of abused animals; closing the Coulston Foundation, freeing hundreds of chimpanzees from the torment of vivisection; closing abusive animal shelters and puppy mills; ending crack cocaine experiments on monkeys, brain cancer experiments on puppies, bone-breaking experiments on greyhounds, and vomiting experiments on cats; saving hundreds of buffalo and horses from being sent to slaughter; freeing 40 dolphins from Japanese fishermen about to kill them.
