Overview

Founded in 1944, Heifer International is a humanitarian assistance and sustainable development organization working to end world hunger and protect the Earth. Through livestock, training, and "Passing on the Gift," Heifer has helped seven million families in more than 125 countries improve their quality of live and move toward greater self-reliance.

Mission

To end hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth.

Program

As Heifer's impact spreads around the world, our holistic approach continually evolves to meet the unique challenges of individual communities. When communities come together and ask for Heifer's assistance, we respond with training and education, livestock and seeds. Heifer helps communities build the foundation to lift families from poverty to self-reliance. Heifer is able to make sustainable impacts through by focusing on training and education for agroecology, animal well-being, gender equity, HIV/AIDS, microenterprise, urban agriculture and young people. Every day, Heifer helps build a world where small farmers provide their families with nutritious meals and where impoverished mothers can better afford adequate housing, medical care and school fees for their children.

Impact

Since 1944 Heifer has helped more than 38 million struggling people in 125 countries become self-reliant through gifts of livestock and education. As the cornerstone of Heifer's work, each family that receives is required to be a part of the giving by passing on the first offspring to another family in need. This result in an incredible ROI for donors; for each animal placed, it is passed on an average of 6 times.

Give Tree Seedlings

Share of Seedlings

Trees have many functions on small family farms. Their roots hold precious top soil in place, and the branches of some varieties provide vitamin-laden fruit--a ready source of both nutrition and income. And in regions where cooking is still done with firewood, families with trees can use fallen branches instead of purchasing or poaching from forest reserves.

$10.00

Give a Llama

Share of a Llama

Llamas and alpacas have special hooves that do not damage the fragile ecosystem--helping communities preserve what little resources are available. And unlike other animals, they can carry heavy loads at high altitudes. Plus, their fine wool is highly prized and provides families with clothing to stay warm and income opportunities that are so hard to come by in the region.

$20.00

Give a Goat

Share of a Goat

Goats are tough to be certain, yet they are amazingly gentle. So friendly, in fact, that it is the children who often care for a family's goat--building bonds and learning lifesaving skills. Heifer goats can give a family up to a gallon of milk every day. Many families use what's left over to make yogurts, cheeses or sell at the market for income to pay...

Give a Heifer

Share of a Heifer

When a family has a cow, every morning there's a glass of rich milk for the children to drink before heading off to school. Classes are paid for with the sale of extra milk because with high-quality heifers, there is more than enough milk to go around. And cows can even help crops grow as their fertilizing manure is mixed into the soil.

Hatch Hope

Chicks for a family

Fully grown, a single hen can lay more than 200 eggs per year.
