Healing Environments

Healing Environments is a fifteen year old nonprofit dedicated to the comforting of those suffering with serious illness. We help to provide resources to their caregivers and families so that their experience can be made as comfortable as possible.

During the past fifteen years we have created over thirty Healing Environments at various hospitals and hospices across the country. These Healing Environments have enabled patients and their families to rise above their suffering by placing them in a context of beauty and meaning.

In addition to our design installations, we have produced over fifty meaning filled publications ranging in topic from hope and forgiveness to design and memoirs. They have been distributed free of charge to thousands of patients and healthcare facilities in fifty states and fifteen countries around the world.

Healing Environments believes that a connection to beauty, art, and meaning enables the suffering to transcend their pain by connecting through the transformative power of an experience that stresses those aspects. The majority of people who experience terminal illness and the emotions and grief that follow sorely lack that from their journey through the recovery process

Publications:

We send our publication, A Light in the Mist, several times a year, free of charge to over 16,000 hospitals, hospices, and individuals across the country and overseas. Each issue has a different theme, offering hope and comfort in the form of stories, poetry, and words of comfort from writers, philosophers, and theologians. In addition, we share our design experience and offer interactive tools for healing.

Warmly embraced by the hospice community, A Light in the Mist reaches beyond the needs of the seriously ill, offering inspiration to all of us who struggle with life's challenges.

Design Services:

Healing Environments provides interior design services and consultations for healthcare facilities, incorporating our unique vision of what makes up a healing environment.

Resource Center:

Located in one of San Francisco's loveliest neighborhoods in a former antique store, our resource center stands as a beacon of comfort to the surrounding healthcare facilities.

In the front room visitors are welcomed into a homelike setting with comfortable couches and a beautiful array of meaningful art and objects. Bookshelves line the walls, overflowing with books on art, spirituality, poetry, design, and healing-as well as how to deal with illness, grief and loss. A large collection of video and audio tapes on these subjects are also available. In the back are healing spaces for meditation, ritual, and the therapeutic practice of sandtray.
