Problem

Afghanistan is one of the most mined countries in the world, with HALO estimates of up to 640,000 mines laid in the ground since 1979. The presence of landmines and UXO (unexploded ordnance) prevents farmers from planting their fields or grazing their livestock. Mined roads and paths block trade and safe access to water. Aid agencies are hesitant to visit mined areas to implement health and education projects. Landmines leave rural populations mired in a continuous cycle of poverty.
