Global Security Institute

The Global Security Institute is dedicated to strengthening international cooperation and security based on the rule of law, with a particular focus on nuclear arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament. GSI was founded by Senator Alan Cranston whose insight that nuclear weapons are impractical, unacceptably risky, and unworthy of civilization continues to inspire GSI's efforts to contribute to a safer world. GSI has developed an exceptional team that includes former heads of state and government, distinguished diplomats, effective politicians, committed celebrities, religious leaders, Nobel Peace Laureates, disarmament and legal experts, and concerned citizens.

The Global Security Institute works through four results oriented programs: the Middle Powers Initiative; Bipartisan Security Group; Parliamentarians for Nuclear Nonproliferation and DIsarmament; and our Disarmament and Peace Education program.

The Global Security Institute was founded in October of 1999 by Senator Alan Cranston (1914-2000) to continue and institutionalize a life-time of dedicated work toward the elimination of nuclear weapons.

Following Senator Cranston’s passing, his son, Kim Cranston, was elected Chair of the Board, and Jonathan Granoff assumed the helm as GSI’s second President.

The Global Security Institute, incorporated in 1999, is the culmination of many years of accomplishments by the organization's original founders.

The Bipartisan Security Group (BSG) targets Members of Congress and their staff;

Disarmament & Peace Education (DPE) engages citizens and leaders in the global community;

Middle Powers Initiative (MPI) works directly with Heads of Government, diplomats, the United Nations and other officials around the world;

Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (PNND) is a network of over 700 legislators around the world in more than 60 countries.

The Bipartisan Security Group (BSG) targets Members of Congress and their staff;

Disarmament & Peace Education (DPE) engages citizens and leaders in the global community;

Middle Powers Initiative (MPI) works directly with Heads of Government, diplomats, the United Nations and other officials around the world;

Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (PNND) is a network of over 700 legislators around the world in more than 60 countries.

- to grow the PNND network to 800 members and at least 5 more countries;
- to bring together key governments at the Carter Center in Atlanta to forge a consensus for strengthening the NonProliferation Treaty;
- to advance sound disarmament and non-proliferation policies on Capitol Hill
- to educate and engage students in this important work;
- to bring public and media attention to the negotiations taking place at the United Nations;
- to advance the Secretary-General's call for a Nuclear Weapons Convention to eliminate all nuclear weapons;
- to work towards the entry-into-force of the treaty prohibiting all nuclear testing.

Jonathan Granoff, President of the Global Security Institute, is also Co-Chair of the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Nuclear Nonproliferation and Senior Advisor to National Security Committee of the International Law Section of the American Bar Association. He serves on numerous governing and advisory boards including the Global Dialogue Institute, Middle Powers Initiative, Jane Goodall Institute, and the Bipartisan Security Group. Mr. Granoff is both a Member of the World Wisdom Council and a Fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has represented the International Peace Bureau at the Nobel Peace Laureate Summits in Rome every year since 2002. He received his Baccalaureate degree, Cum Laude, from Vassar College and Juris Doctorate from Rutgers University School of Law.
