Global Fund for Children

As a grant-making organization, we at The Global Fund for Children invests in some of the best community-based groups serving the most vulnerable children and youth. Our programs touch the lives of thousands of children and show that small investments can have a huge impact. We were founded in 1994 by Maya Ajmera, a social entrepreneur. As a non-profit organization, we are dependent on contributions from private donors and foundations.

At The Global Fund for Children, we envision a world where all children grow up to be productive, caring citizens of a global society. To this end, we work to advance the dignity of children and youth worldwide.

Through our Grantmaking program, we make small grants to innovative community-based organizations working with the world’s vulnerable children and youth. We gave our first grants in 1997, using the royalties of our first book, “Children from Australia to Zimbabwe." Since then, we have given nearly $5 million to 205 grantee partners in 61 countries. We target grassroots organizations because many of the most creative and effective sustainable projects are generated at the community level. Their programs are rooted in community initiative and driven by entrepreneurial leaders. Supporting them at a relatively early stage in their development also maximizes the value and impact of our investment.

Through our Global Media Ventures program, we harness the power of books, films, and documentary photography to celebrate community and diversity and meet the challenges faced by young people all over the world. Our Global Fund for Children Books has award-winning titles. To date, we have given away some 50,000 books through our Books for Kids project. We have invested in the film, “Going to School in India," based on a book that we published. Our photography fellowship continues to document the children served by our grantee partners all over the world.

Our experience has proven that small grants can have a big impact. Our goal is to build the capacity of community-based organizations, individually and collectively, to serve and advocate for the rights and needs of vulnerable children and youth in their communities and beyond. We do not expect our grants to alter national-level indicators. Rather, our grants incrementally strengthen the social fabric that envelops and supports the next generation, child by child, organization by organization, and community by community.
