Overview

The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF), founded in 1987, is the largest feminist research and action organization dedicated to women's equality, reproductive health, and non violence. FMF engages in research and public policy development, public education programs, grassroots organizing projects, and leadership training and development programs. Additionally, the Feminist Majority Foundation publishes Ms. magazine, the oldest and largest feminist periodical in the world, recognized as one of the most influential magazines in history.

Mission

To advance the legal, social, and political equality of women with men; counter the backlash to women's advancement; and recruit and train young feminists to encourage future leadership. All of our work incorporates a global focus, as we are committed to winning equality for women worldwide.

Program

Since its inception, FMF has conducted many programs to empower women and girls in the U.S. and globally. For example, our Choices Campus Leadership Program is the nation’s largest pro-choice campus network, educating and mobilizing young people on college campuses for women’s empowerment and reproductive rights. FMF’s National Clinic Access Project defends the nation’s 587 independent clinics, which provide the majority of abortions in the U.S. and are among the most targeted by extremists. FMF led a successful twelve-year fight to make mifepristone available to U.S. women as an early medical abortion option, and we now lead efforts to keep mifepristone on the market and to expand public awareness of and research on mifepristone’s potential use as a treatment for life-threatening illnesses that predominantly affect women.

Our Global Program works to lift restrictions imposed by the U.S. on family planning and abortion, stop state-assisted violence against women globally, and end systematic violence toward women living under extreme fundamentalist rule. Our Campaign for Afghan Women and Girls was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Additionally, FMF publishes Ms. magazine, the oldest and largest feminist periodical in the world, recognized as an infuential thought leader magazine.

Impact

Over the past 20 years, our work has improved women’s lives in the U.S. and globally. We have played a leadership role in securing the Violence Against Women Act; in the FDA approval of mifepristone; in the non-recognition of the Taliban by the U.S. and UN for its horrendous treatment of Afghan women; and in mobilizing more than 1 million people to march for reproductive rights. We have trained over 45,000 volunteers in nonviolent women’s clinic defense techniques. With special consultative status with the UN’s Economic and Social Council, FMF has led successful fights to stop the stoning of women.

Help Sick Women

One month of treatment

The Feminist Majority Foundation runs the only Mifepristone Compassionate Use Program in the country. Our program serves as the only hope for many critically ill patients, mostly women, who have exhausted all standard therapies, including chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. Mifepristone is a life line for these women, and some men, some of whom have depended on this drug for over a decade. Since the program’s...
