Problem

In Uganda, only one-quarter to one-third of those requiring health care use the government facilities. Some of the major obstacles in accessing the services by the poor are poor facilities, lack of qualified health workers, frequent shortage of drugs and long waiting times (WHO, Strategy Paper; 2006). The situation is further intensified by the fact that 51% of households don't have access to health care and only 49% of the population lives within 5 km of a health facility (DFID).

The Gift

BRAC’s Community Health Promoters (CHPs) are the first point of contact between the community members and the public and private health provider’s network. Every month, a CHP visits 200 households—reaching roughly 1,000 individuals—and provides health education, free pregnancy and infant check-ups, and keeps a record of their clients’ health so they can be referred to a doctor as needed. Your $10 gift can support a CHP’s work with one household in Uganda over the course of a year by contributing to her training.
