Mission

Africare works to improve the quality of life in Africa.

Africare works in partnership with African communities to achieve healthy and productive societies. For Africare, communities are the core of all development activities as we believe strong communities are the foundation needed to achieve sustainable development.

History

Africare, fittingly, was conceived in Africa -- in the Republic of Niger.

From 1968 - 1974, Sahelian West Africa suffered severe drought. Almost no rain fell. The region's 25 million people were affected. Thousands of them died.

Two Americans-- William O. Kirker, M.D., and his wife, Barbra, who had worked din Niger's Maine-Soroa Hospital since 1966-- sought to help by forming a charity "to provide medical services and health care to the people of Africa, beginning in ... Niger." That Charity, named "Africare," was incorporated in Hawaii on Sept. 20, 1970

Program

Among US based non profits working in the developing world, Africare has the largest presence in Africa. Africare presently works or has worked in every region of the African continent and has more active programs in Africa than any other US based non profit organization.

Africare projects focus on two principal interrelated areas: Food Security & Agriculture and Health & HIV/AIDS. Africare also has a long history of providing short term humanitarian assistance when emergencies both natural and manmade occur.

It is often stated that "Africare's work begins where the road ends" meaning that most of the organization's work is with communities in remote and rural locations. As a result, in addition to helping communities secure necessary health assistance and access to sufficient food, Africare also assists communities in a variety of other ways. For example, Africare helps communities gain access to clean water and helps promote ways for communities to address their need to use natural resources for energy while also devising ways to protect and preserve the environment.

Africare also supports communities through literacy and vocational training, micro enterprise development, civil society development and governance programs.

Impact

Since it's founding in 1970, Africare has delivered more than $675 million in assistance via over 2,000 projects while working in 36 countries Africa wide. Today Africare has in operation over 150 programs which provide assistance to families and communities in 25 nations in every region of the African continent.
