Overview

Recognized worldwide as a leader in the fight against hunger, Action Against Hunger (ACF) delivers programs in over 40 countries, specializing in emergency situations of war, conflict, and natural disasters and longer-term assistance to people in distress. Our ultimate goal is to help vulnerable populations regain their self-sufficiency for long term sustainability.

Mission

To save the lives of malnourished children and adults while seeking long-term solutions to hunger through self-sustaining programs.

Program

Action Against Hunger's life-saving programs deliver relief, recovery and rehabilitation services to people in need in over 40 countries around the world. Our comprehensive, innovative programs integrate activities in Nutrition, Water and Sanitation, Food Security, and Health Care.

Nutrition Programs:
Nutrition programs aim at assessing, preventing, and treating acute malnutrition among the most vulnerable populations, especially young children and pregnant women. Health programs consist of fighting diseases linked with malnutrition.

Food Security:
Action Against Hunger's food security programs include both emergency programs - such as emergency food distributions - as well as long-term programs. These programs aim at boosting agricultural and/or economic activity providing populations with sufficient access to food of a satisfactory quality and improving self-sufficiency.

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene:
These programs aim at guaranteeing access to drinking water and good sanitary conditions (by providing wells, water distribution networks, latrines, hygiene education sessions, etc). In 2006, 1,852,490 people benefited from these programs.

Advocacy:
Action Against Hunger raises awareness about hunger and seeks to alert and influence the international community when fundamental rights such as access to water or food are violated. Action Against Hunger's advocacy efforts aim at affecting institutional and cultural changes to help create a world without hunger.

Impact

The international community recognizes ACF as a leader in the fight against hunger with our life-saving therapeutic feeding centers and supplementary feeding programs. Action Against Hunger's Scientific Committee pioneered the therapeutic milk formula (F100) now used by all major humanitarian organizations.
The therapeutic feeding centers are at the heart of our nutritional program: in less than 30 days, children and adults dying from acute malnutrition are cured.

Our first initiatives provided assistance to Afghan refugees in Pakistan, Ugandan populations affected by war and drought, and helped Cambodian refugees in Thailand. During the 1980s and 1990s, ACF was involved in crises in countries that include Ethiopia, Iraq, Rwanda and Bosnia.

Today, we assist over 5 million people in some 40 countries.
