Save A Rainforest

5 tropical seedlings

  • $50.00

Problem

Rainforests are one of the world's most important and diverse ecosystems yet thousands of acres disappear each day, along with many species of flora and fauna. The eastern seaboard of northern Australia once supported extensive rainforests, but logging, mining and extensive agricultural production—primarily sugar cane and dairy—have destroyed and disrupted rainforest habitats and the traditional lands of Aboriginal people. Today, only fragments of the original forests remain.

The Gift

Over the last ten years, students and faculty at The School for Field Studies Center for Rainforest Studies have planted more than 15,000 trees, many of which were grown from seed at our own field station nursery. Your gift will support rainforest tree production in our nursery and enable us to transplant our seedlings into rainforest restoration sites where they will help combat fragmentation and climate change. You will support ongoing costs such as soil, fertilizer, and pots as well as maintenance equipment for the restoration sites--hoes, mattocks and pruning implements--to control weeds which compete with the seedlings. We will monitor the growth of your seedlings and the recruitment of new seedlings to the reforested areas in which they are planted, all the while establishing best practices for achieving successful rainforest restoration in Northeastern Australia and potentially, rainforests around the world.
