Problem

Deaf children often live in isolation. Communication is limited to home-made gestures. Parents are often misinformed about deafness. Without meaningful communication, Deaf children become frustrated and angry. Families rarely have access to sign language. The gift of a Deaf Community Worker provides families with an educated Deaf role-model who visit the homes of Deaf children. They help the family understand deafness, teach sign language and counsel the Deaf child.

The Gift

Your gift of $50 provides three months’ full support to Deaf Community Workers (DCW). The DCWs are provided from this gift a small stipend, travel allowances and materials to share with families. This could also include a sign language picture vocabulary book to facilitate communication within the family (see gift #8). The DCW will often travel with a hearing teacher of the Deaf who can interpret to the family. The DCW works with the child to improve confidence and communication skills.
